A Hidden Island Gem

Tucked away in the beautiful Bismarck Sea, off the northern coast of Papua New Guinea, lies the remote and fascinating Mushu Island. Also known as Muschu Island, Mushu is part of the Schouten Islands, a scattered group of tropical islands situated just offshore from Wewak in East Sepk Province.

Surrounded by warm tropical waters, coral reefs and abundant marine life, Mushu has the character of a true Pacific island. Its relatively remote location has helped preserve a way of life that remains closely connected to the sea, the land and the traditions of the local communities.

Part of the Schouten Islands

The Schouten Islands form an important island group in the Bismarck Sea, along the northern coastline of Papua New Guinea. Mushu is one of several islands in the region, with Kairiru Island, Walis Island and Tarawai Island among the other islands found in the wider group.

The islands are characterised by lush tropical vegetation, rugged coastlines, beaches and surrounding reefs. Their position in the Bismarck Sea also gives them an extraordinary marine environment, with opportunities for fishing, diving, snorkelling, boating and surfing.

Close to Wewak, Yet a World Away

One of the fascinating aspects of Mushu Island is its proximity to Wewak, the provincial capital of East Sepik. Mushu lies only around 25–30 kilometres offshore, yet travelling from the mainland to the island can feel like entering a completely different world.

Wewak provides the principal connection between Mushu and the rest of Papua New Guinea. From the mainland, the journey across the Bismarck Sea opens up a spectacular view of the islands and their surrounding waters.

A Special Part of Papua New Guinea

Mushu’s combination of isolation, natural beauty and cultural richness makes it a particularly interesting part of Papua New Guinea. Unlike many better-known Pacific destinations, the Schouten Islands remain relatively undeveloped and largely unknown to international travellers.

That remoteness is part of their appeal. The islands offer an opportunity to experience a very different side of Papua New Guinea — one where communities, ocean, forests and traditional island life remain closely intertwined.

For anyone interested in adventure, surfing, fishing, marine exploration, education or sustainable island development, Mushu Island presents an intriguing destination. Its location in the Schouten Islands places it within one of Papua New Guinea’s most beautiful and least explored coastal regions.

Mushu Island may be relatively small and remote, but its position in the Schouten Islands gives it a fascinating place in the geography, history and future of Papua New Guinea.
